From 1995 to 2019/20, in a study of 20 major nations , homicides decreased in 75% of them, by an average of 50% (Singapore, Russia, Australia, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, France, India, Spain, Argentina, Belgium, the United States, the U.K., Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and New Zealand).
One nation, Canada, had no change.
Four of those nations, or 20%, had increases in homicide, by an average of 65% (Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and New Zealand).
Two of those nations, South Korea and New Zealand, have the highest and second highest smartphone and internet penetrations of the surveyed nations.
From 1995 to 2019/20, In a study of 14 major nations (Russia, Canada, Croatia, Belgium, Argentina, Japan, U.K., New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, United States, Mexico, Brazil, and India), suicide increased in eight of them, or 57% by an average of 30.8% (U.K.
New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, United States, Mexico, Brazil, India).
During that same time period, suicide decreased in 6 of those 14 nations, or 43%, by an average of 18.8% (Russia, Canada, Croatia, Belgium, Argentina, Japan).
We’re going to need the help of a statistics professional to take this forward, obviously.
The data below stops in its tracks where I was when I got to crafting this e-mail. This is a work in progress, obviously.

From 1995 to 2020, the homicide rate in Singapore decreased by 88% , from 1.53 per 100,000 to .17 per 100,000.
From 1995 to 2020, the homicide rate in Russia decreased by 85% from 30.8 per 100,000 to 4.7 per 100,000.
From 1995 to 2020, the homicide rate in Italy decreased by 73% from 1.77 per 100,000 to .47 per 100,000.
From 1995 to 2020, the homicide rate in Croatia decreased by 72% from 3.6 per 100,000 to 1 per 100,000.
From 1995 to 2020, murders in New York City decreased by 68%, from 1,550 to 500.
