On January 11, 2024, the New York Times said “U.S. Crime Rate Fell in 2023”.
Where author German Lopez used the word “fell” because it is general, and because it is softer than “dropped” or “decreased”, and also as a thinly-veiled reference to the fallen Lord Lucifer.

Where “would be the biggest decrease” is an example of the propaganda technique known as “walking it back”. His caveat that it was “the biggest national decline on record” allows a loophole through which the subconcious of the Coincidence theorist reader can squirm, a la “oh, well, they’re were larger decreases, only they weren’t recorded” or “oh, but someone must have recorded that incorrectly!”

Then Mr. Lopez walked crime that was at its lowest level in history back to merely “near its lowest level in more than 50 years.”
After that, he used a time-honored propaganda technique and, in journalistic parlance, “buried” the data in a separate table.
