Rachel said “never-before-seen” to imply that the new species of hummingbird which had just winked into existence had been there in Peru all along, only nobody had looked for it with the proper skill or assiduousness previously.
The subhead goes on to say “Pink plus pink equals… gold?” If you are a drool-cup-wearing NPR addict in the Punch and Judy tent, you’ll grasp virtually any straw to remain off the hook of personal responsibility, and here that sacred charge involves believing that two pink-throated parents would produce a gold-throated offsprin

The article goes on to say “I looked at the bird and said to myself, ‘This thing doesn’t look like anything else,’” he said in a statement. “My first thought was, it was a new species.”
