As a propagandist, Matt knows that sixty to seventy percent of readers only read the headlines. And, thus, his hedging generality, “homicide down” compartmentalizes awareness of the speed and scope of the exponential decrease in violent crime that I’m documenting here.
You have to dig down four paragraphs into the article to get to “Per the CPD, homicides in the city this year are down about 16% compared to 2021, while the total number of shootings (1,904) is down nearly 19%. For the month of August alone, there was an 18% decline in homicides in the city, compared to the same month last year (80).”
For grade school children studying the subject in the future, asking the average American in 2022 to read four additional paragraphs is like asking someone from the 1920’s to read a paperback book at a sitting. In journalistic parlance, putting the information so far down in the story is called “burying it”.
