Where author Kelly Jensen wrote “more popular than ever" because, as a propagandist, he knows that seventy percent of readers only read the headlines, and his hedging generality goes a long way toward “compartmentalizing” awareness of the exponential scope of the increase in library usage that she’s attempting to obfuscate. It’s an example of the propaganda technique known as “compartmentalization”.

In journalistic parlance, Kelly “buried” this eleven paragraphs down:

“In 2019, the average library card holder used almost 17 items each year. This is an increase of almost 11% since 2014.”

For grade school children studying the subject in the future, asking the average American in 2022 to read eleven paragraphs is like asking someone from the 1950’s to read “The Great Gatsby” at a sitting.

To make the gambit even more spectacular, she put it under the heading “Are Libraries Dying?

From 2014 to 2019, the number of items used per year by the average library card holder increased by 11%, to 17 items. Bookriot.com’s Kelly Jensen omitted the statistic from the headline and buried it eleven paragraphs down, under the heading “Are Libraries Dying?

It’s an example of the propaganda technique known as “compartmentalization”.

Did you notice how both titles that Mary used feature the subject of death?

In journalistic parlance, Mary “buried” this in the body text below:

“In 2021, LGBTQ fiction titles doubled the previous year’s sales, according to market research firm The NPD Group. So far in 2022, their sales have continued to increase by 39%.”

Where author Mary Cadden walked “100%” back to “doubled” and redacted 2020 and replaced it with “the previous year”. The people who do this sort of thing for a living call it “tradecraft”.

She was desperate to avoid plainly stating “from 2020 to 2021, LGBTQ print book fiction sales increased by 100%.” And “from January through May 2022, LGBTQ print book fiction sales increased by 39%.”

It’s an example of the propaganda technique known as “compartmentalization”.

In journalistic parlance, this is “buried” in the body text below:

“Comic-book sales — including graphic novels, single issues, and digital comics — hit $2.075 billion in 2021, a 62% increase from the previous year and a 70% increase over 2019, according to a report released last week by the comic-sales research website Comichron and ICv2, a website that covers the comics business.”

Travis gymnastically chopped that up to avoid plainly stating “from 2020 to 2021, comic book sales increased by 70%, to their highest level in history.” And “from 2019 to 2021, comic book sales increased by 70%”. That’s an annual average of 35%.
